Why don't they just shoot sand out at the oil spill? They use some ships in Dubai to build the palm tree islands and they also use the ships to maintain them. They could use the same principle here, but use it to fight the oil spill instead. We all see how the oil collects into balls when it comes into contact with the sand. So, the idea would be that, by shooting the sand out at the oil spill, the oil will ball up will be contained more easily.
By working around the edges of the spill and working from the outside in, they will keep the spill from spreading further out. Oil sticks to anything it comes in contact with (besides water), so why not shoot trillions of particles at it to stick to? The oil will stick to it and can be easily contained, much like urine in a litter box (the basic principle).
Use dredging ships and retrofitted fishing vessels to do this by working together by having boundaries. The smaller vessels will work nearer to shore and the larger ones will be further out closer to the source. The oil floats, so it will be easy to collect.
The oil can be collected by other dredging ships that will collect the oil/sand mix and put it into container ships and/or store it themselves until they take the oily mix to its destination. Ships can work side by side to collect, dispense and gather the oil mix.
Once The oil mix is gathered onto a vessel, the vessel can ship it to trucks waiting to ship it off to coal burning steam plants much like Bull Run Steam Plant in Oak Ridge Tennessee. Collecting and burning this could help out some of the slow mining communities by giving them new positions with this cleanup effort.
This is only a collection method. Someone else can come up with what to do with it after the burn off. It can be re-entered to the sea, I suppose. I guess it all depends on what they get after the burn off. Who knows... it could have possible uses for many things we don't have any idea about yet.
Let's give this a shot since nothing else seems to be working and nobody else has come with an equally sufficient idea.
